Dr Commander selvam

Karma is the law of moral causation. The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine in Buddhism. This belief was prevalent in India before the advent of the Buddha. Nevertheless, it was the Buddha who explained and formulated this doctrine in the complete form in which we have it today. What is the cause of the inequality that exists among mankind? Why should one person be brought up in the lap of luxury, endowed with fine mental, moral and physical qualities, and another in absolute poverty, steeped in misery? Why should one person be a mental prodigy, and another an idiot? Why should one person be born with saintly characteristics and another with criminal tendencies? Why should some be linguistic, artistic, mathematically inclined, or musical from the very cradle? Why should others be congenitally blind, deaf, or deformed? Why should some be blessed, and others cursed from their births? Either this inequality of mankind has a cause, or it is purely accidental.

No sensible person would think of attributing this unevenness, this inequality, and this diversity to blind chance or pure accident. In this world nothing happens to a person that he does not for some reason or other deserve. Usually, men of ordinary intellect cannot comprehend the actual reason or reasons. The definite invisible cause or causes of the visible effect is not necessarily confined to the present life, they may be traced to a proximate or remote past birth. According to Buddhism, this inequality is due not only to heredity, environment, “nature and nurture”, but also to Karma. In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate.

Perplexed by the seemingly inexplicable, apparent disparity that existed among humanity, a young truth-seeker approached the Buddha and questioned him regarding this intricate problem of inequality:

“What is the cause, what is the reason, O Lord,” questioned he, “that we find amongst mankind the short-lived and long-lived, the healthy and the diseased, the ugly and beautiful, those lacking influence and the powerful, the poor and the rich, the low-born and the high-born, and the ignorant and the wise?”

The Buddha’s reply was:

“All living beings have actions (Karma) as their own, their inheritance, their congenital cause, their kinsman, their refuge. It is Karma that differentiates beings into low and high states.” He then explained the cause of such differences in accordance with the law of cause and effect.

Certainly we are born with hereditary characteristics. At the same time we possess certain innate abilities that science cannot adequately account for. To our parents we are indebted for the gross sperm and ovum that form the nucleus of this so-called being. They remain dormant within each parent until this potential germinal compound is vitalised by the karmic energy needed for the production of the foetus. Karma is therefore the indispensable conceptive cause of this being. The accumulated karmic tendencies, inherited in the course of previous lives, at times play a far greater role than the hereditary parental cells and genes in the formation of both physical and mental characteristics.

The Buddha, for instance, inherited, like every other person, the reproductive cells and genes from his parents. But physically, morally and intellectually there was none comparable to him in his long line of Royal ancestors. In the Buddha’s own words, he belonged not to the Royal lineage, but to that of the Aryan Buddhas. He was certainly a superman, an extraordinary creation of his own Karma. According to the Lakkhana Sutta of Digha Nikaya, the Buddha inherited exceptional features, such as the 32 major marks, as the result of his past meritorious deeds. The ethical reason for acquiring each physical feature is clearly explained in the Sutta. It is obvious from this unique case that karmic tendencies could not only influence our physical organism, but also nullify the potentiality of the parental cells and genes – hence the significance of the Buddha’s enigmatic statement, – “We are the heirs of our own actions.” Dealing with this problem of variation, the Atthasalini, being a commentary on the Abhidharma, states:
“Depending on this difference in Karma appears the differences in the birth of beings, high and low, base and exalted, happy and miserable. Depending on the difference in

Karma appears the difference in the individual features of beings as beautiful and ugly, high-born or low born, well-built or deformed. Depending on the difference in Karma appears the difference in worldly conditions of beings, such as gain and loss, and disgrace, blame and praise, happiness and misery.” Thus, from a Buddhist point of view, our present mental, moral intellectual and temperamental differences are, for the most part, due to our own actions and tendencies, both past and present. Although Buddhism attributes this variation to Karma, as being the chief cause among a variety, it does not, however, assert that everything is due to Karma. The law of Karma, important as it is, is only one of the twenty-four conditions described in Buddhist Philosophy. Refuting the erroneous view that “whatsoever fortune or misfortune experienced is all due to some previous action”, the Buddha said: ”So, then, according to this view, owing to previous action men will become murderers, thieves, unchaste, liars, slanderers, covetous, malicious and perverts. Thus, for those who fall back on the former deeds as the essential reason, there is neither the desire to do, nor effort to do, nor necessity to do this deed, or abstain from this deed.” It was this important text, which states the belief that all physical circumstances and mental attitudes spring solely from past Karma that Buddha contradicted. If the present life is totally conditioned or wholly controlled by our past actions, then certainly Karma is tantamount to fatalism or determinism or predestination.

If this were true, free will would be an absurdity. Life would be purely mechanistic, not much different from a machine. Being created by an Almighty God who controls our destinies and predetermines our future, or being produced by an irresistible Karma that completely determines our fate and controls our life’s course, independent of any free action on our part, is essentially the same. The only difference lies in the two words God and Karma. One could easily be substituted for the other, because the ultimate operation of both forces would be identical.
Such a fatalistic doctrine is not the Buddhist law of Karma. According to Buddhism, there are five orders or processes (niyama) which operate in the physical and mental realms.

They are:

Utu Niyama

physical inorganic order, e.g. seasonal phenomena of winds and rains. The unerring order of seasons, characteristic seasonal changes and events, causes of winds and rains, nature of heat, etc., all belong to this group.

Bija Niyama

order of germs and seeds (physical organic order), e.g. rice produced from rice-seed, sugary taste from sugar-cane or honey, peculiar characteristics of certain fruits, etc. The scientific theory of cells and genes and the physical similarity of twins may be ascribed to this order.

Karma Niyama

order of act and result, e.g., desirable and undesirable acts produce corresponding good and bad results. As surely as water seeks its own level so does Karma, given opportunity, produce its inevitable result, not in the form of a reward or punishment but as an innate sequence. This sequence of deed and effect is as natural and necessary as the way of the sun and the moon.

Dhamma Niyama

order of the norm, e.g., the natural phenomena occurring at the advent of a Bodhisattva in his last birth. Gravitation and other similar laws of nature. The natural reason for being good and so forth, may be included in this group

Citta Niyama

order or mind or psychic law, e.g., processes of consciousness, arising and perishing of consciousness, constituents of consciousness, power of mind, etc., including telepathy, telaesthesia, retro-cognition, premonition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, thought-reading and such other psychic phenomena which are inexplicable to modern science. Every mental or physical phenomenon could be explained by these all-embracing five orders or processes which are laws in themselves. Karma as such is only one of these five orders. Like all other natural laws they demand no lawgiver.

Of these five, the physical inorganic order and the order of the norm are more or less mechanistic, though they can be controlled to some extent by human ingenuity and the power of mind. For example, fire normally burns, and extreme cold freezes, but man has walked scathe less over fire and meditated naked on Himalayan snows; horticulturists have worked marvels with flowers and fruits;

Yogis have performed levitation. Psychic law is equally mechanistic, but Buddhist training aims at control of mind, which is possible by right understanding and skilful volition. Karma law operates quite automatically and, when the Karma is powerful, man cannot interfere with its inexorable result though he may desire to do so; but here also right understanding and skilful volition can accomplish much and mould the future. Good Karma, persisted in, can thwart the reaping of bad Karma, or as some Western scholars prefer to say ‘action influence’, is certainly an intricate law whose working is fully comprehended only by a Buddha. The Buddhist aims at the final destruction of all Karma.

The Pali term Karma literally means action or doing. Any kind of intentional action whether mental, verbal, or physical, is regarded as Karma. It covers all that is included in the phrase “thought, word and deed”. Generally speaking, all good and bad action constitutes Karma. In its ultimate sense Karma means all moral and immoral volition. Involuntary, unintentional or unconscious actions, though technically deeds, do not constitute Karma, because volition, the most important factor in determining Karma, is absent.

The Buddha says:

“I declare, O Bhikkhus, that volition is Karma. Having willed one acts by body, speech, and thought.”

Every volitional action of individuals, save those of Buddhas and Arahants, is called Karma. The exception made in their case is because they are delivered from both good and evil; they have eradicated ignorance and craving, the roots of Karma.”Destroyed are their germinal seeds (Khina bija); selfish desires no longer grow,” states the Ratana Sutta of Sutta nipata. This does not mean that the Buddha and Arahantas are passive. They are tirelessly active in working for the real well being and happiness of all. Their deeds ordinarily accepted as good or moral, lack creative power as regards themselves. Understanding things as they truly are, they have finally shattered their cosmic fetters – the chain of cause and effect.

Karma does not necessarily mean past actions. It embraces both past and present deeds. Hence in one sense, we are the result of what we were; we will be the result of what we are. In another sense, it should be added, we are not totally the result of what we were; we will not absolutely be the result of what we are. The present is no doubt the offspring of the past and is the present of the future, but the present is not always a true index of either the past or the future; so complex is the working of Karma. It is this doctrine of Karma that the mother teaches her child when she says “Be good and you will be happy and we will love you; but if you are bad, you will be unhappy and we will not love you.” In short, Karma is the law of cause and effect in the ethical realm. Karma is action, and Vipaka, fruit or result, is its reaction.

Just as every object is accompanied by a shadow, even so every volitional activity is inevitably accompanied by its due effect. Karma is like potential seed: Vipaka could be likened to the fruit arising from the tree – the effect or result. Anisamsa and Adinaya are the leaves, flowers and so forth that correspond to external differences such as health, sickness and poverty – these are inevitable consequences, which happen at the same time. Strictly speaking, both Karma and Vipaka pertain to the mind. As Karma may be good or bad, so may Vipaka, – the fruit – is good or bad.

As Karma is mental so Vipaka is mental (of the mind). It is experienced as happiness, bliss, unhappiness or misery, according to the nature of the Karma seed. Anisamsa are the concomitant advantages – material things such as prosperity, health and longevity. When Vipaka’s concomitant material things are disadvantageous, they are known as Adinaya, full of wretchedness, and appear as poverty, ugliness, disease, short life-span and so forth. As we sow, we reap somewhere and sometime, in his life or in a future birth. What we reap today is what we have sown either in the present or in the past.

The Samyutta Nikaya states:

“According to the seed that’s sown,
So is the fruit you reap there from,
Doer of good will gather good,
Doer of evil, evil reaps,
Down is the seed and thou shalt taste
The fruit thereof.”

Karma is a law in itself, which operates in its own field without the intervention of any external, independent ruling agency. Happiness and misery, which are the common lot of humanity, are the inevitable effects of causes. From a Buddhist point of view, they are not rewards and punishments, assigned by a supernatural, omniscient ruling power to a soul that has done good or evil. Theists, who attempt to explain everything in this and temporal life and in the eternal future life, ignoring a past, believe in a ‘postmortem’ justice, and may regard present happiness and misery as blessings and curses conferred on His creation by an omniscient and omnipotent Divine Ruler who sits in heaven above controlling the destinies of the human race. Buddhism, which emphatically denies such an Almighty, All merciful God-Creator and an arbitrarily created immortal soul, believes in natural law and justice which cannot be suspended by either an Almighty God or an All-compassionate Buddha. According to this natural law, acts bear their own rewards and punishments to the individual doer whether human justice finds out or not. There are some who criticize thus: “So, you Buddhists, too, administer capitalistic opium to the people, saying: “You are born poor in this life on account of your past evil karma. He is born rich on account of his good Karma.

So, be satisfied with your humble lot; but do good to be rich in your next life. You are being oppressed now because of your past evil Karma. There is your destiny. Be humble and bear your sufferings patiently. Do good now. You can be certain of a better and happier life after death.”

The Buddhist doctrine of Karma does not expound such ridiculous fatalistic views. Nor does it vindicate a postmortem justice. The All-Merciful Buddha, who had no ulterior selfish motives, did not teach this law of Karma to protect the rich and comfort the poor by promising illusory happiness in an after-life. While we are born to a state created by ourselves, yet by our own self-directed efforts there is every possibility for us to create new, favorable environments even here and now. Not only individually, but also, collectively, we are at liberty to create fresh Karma that leads either towards our progress or downfall in this very life. According to the Buddhist doctrine of Karma, one is not always compelled by an ‘iron necessity’, for Karma is neither fate, nor predestination imposed upon us by some mysterious unknown power to which we must helplessly submit ourselves. It is one’s own doing reacting on oneself, and so one has the possibility to divert the course of one’s Karma to some extent. How far one diverts it depends on oneself. Is one bound to reap all that one has sown in just proportion?

The Buddha provides an answer:

“If anyone says that a man or woman must reap in this life according to his present deeds, in that case there is no religious life, nor is an opportunity afforded for the entire extinction of sorrow. But if anyone says that what a man or woman reaps in this and future lives accords with his or her deeds present and past, in that case there is a religious life, and an opportunity is afforded for the entire extinction of a sorrow.” (Anguttara Nikaya)

Spirituality
With the blessings of the Almighty and Swamiji I shared some of my thoughts on Spirituality in Upanishads during the past issues. In this issue I wish to discuss Lord Krishna’s ideas on “how to get the best wisdom or knowledge”. According to the thoughts of great saints like Sri.Sankaracharya, Sri.Ramanuja and Sri Madhwacharya Lord Krishna is not only the reincarnation of Lord Mahavishnu. But he is considered as the wisest. Great scholars like Sri.Rajaji and Dr.S.Radhakrishnan considered Lord Krishna as the best statesman. I am not a scholar like them. But with the blessings of Almighty I wish to discuss a little bit about the ”Gnana Yoga”, the fourth chapter of Bhagavat Geetha. Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna, how to get great knowledge, wisdom and mental courage to face the situations. Arjuna was facing the worst situation of facing his cousin brothers, teachers and other close relatives in the battle field. Lord Krishna sat as the driver of Arjuna’s chariot and explained him to face the situations.Instaed of writing as an essay I give this in the form of questions and answers.
The Blessed Lord said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of humankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku. This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciple succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. However, in course of time, the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost. That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by me to you because you are my devotee as well as my friend; therefore you can understand the transcendental mystery of this science.
Arjuna said: The sun-god Vivasvan is senior by birth to you. How am I to understand that in the beginning you instructed this science to him?
The Blessed Lord said: Many, many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, because you are mortal and I am immortal. Although I am unborn and my transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all sentient beings, I still appear in every millennium in my original transcendental form. Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice and a predominant rise of irreligion–at that time I descend myself. In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent myself millennium after millennium.
One who knows the transcendental nature of my appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains my eternal abode. Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by knowledge of Me and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me. All of them as they surrender unto me I reward accordingly. Everyone follows my path in all respects. Men in this world desire success in furtive activities, and therefore they worship the demigods. Quickly, of course, men get results from furtive work in this world.
According to the three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by me. And, although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable. There is no work that affects Me; nor do I aspire for the fruits of action. One who understands this truth about me also does not become entangled in the furtive reactions of work.
All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with this understanding and so attained liberation. Therefore, as the ancients, you should perform your duty in this divine consciousness. Even the intelligent are bewildered in determining what is action and what is inaction. Now I shall explain to you what action is, knowing which you shall be liberated from all sins. The intricacies of action are very hard to understand. Therefore one should know properly what action is, what forbidden action is, and what inaction is.
One, who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is intelligent among men, and he is in the transcendental position, although engaged in all sorts of activities. One is understood to be in full knowledge whose every act is devoid of desire for sense gratification. He is said by sages to be a worker whose furtive action is burnt up by the fire of perfect knowledge. Abandoning all attachment to the results of his activities, ever satisfied and independent, he performs no furtive action, although engaged in all kinds of undertakings.
Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions and acts only for the bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions. He who is satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and does not envy, who is steady both in success and failure, is never entangled, although performing actions.
The work of a man who is unattached to the modes of material nature and who is fully situated in transcendental knowledge merges entirely into transcendence.
A person who is fully absorbed in Lord Krishna’s teachings and follows it is sure to attain the spiritual kingdom because of his full contribution to spiritual activities, in which the consummation is absolute and that which is offered is of the same spiritual nature. Some yogis perfectly worship the demigods by offering different sacrifices to them, and some of them offer sacrifices in the fire of the Supreme Brahman. Some of them sacrifice the hearing process and the senses in the fire of the controlled mind, and others sacrifice the objects of the senses, such as sound, in the fire of sacrifice.
Those who are interested in self-realization, in terms of mind and sense control, offer the functions of all the senses, as well as the vital force [breath], as oblations into the fire of the controlled mind.
There are others who, enlightened by sacrificing their material possessions in severe austerities, take strict vows and practice the yoga of eightfold mysticism, and others study the Vedas for the advancement of transcendental knowledge. And there are even others who are inclined to the process of breath restraint to remain in trance, and they practice stopping the movement of the outgoing breath into the incoming, and incoming breath into the outgoing, and thus at last remain in trance, stopping all breathing. Some of them, curtailing the eating process, offer the outgoing breath into itself, as a sacrifice.
All these performers who know the meaning of sacrifice become cleansed of sinful reaction, and, having tasted the nectar of the remnants of such sacrifice, they go to the supreme eternal atmosphere. Dear Arjuna, without sacrifice one can never live happily on this planet or in this life: what then of the next? All these different types of sacrifice are approved by the Vedas, and all of them are born of different types of work. Knowing them as such, you will become liberated.
Dear Arjuna, you are very wonderful and brave person. Do not fear on the situations. Their karma is like that. You are used only as a weapon or some sort of machinery by the karma or destiny. The sacrifice of knowledge is greater than the sacrifice of material possessions. So, dear Arjuna, after all, the sacrifice of work culminates in transcendental knowledge. Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.
And when you have thus learned the truth, you will know that all living beings are but part of me–and that they are in me, and are mine. Even if you are considered to be the most sinful of all sinners, when you are situated in the boat of transcendental knowledge, you will be able to cross over the ocean of miseries. As the blazing fire turns firewood to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge burn to ashes all reactions to material activities.
In this world, there is nothing as sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self with himself in due course of time. A faithful man who is absorbed in transcendental knowledge and who subdues his senses quickly attains the supreme spiritual peace.
But ignorant and faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God consciousness. For the doubting soul there is happiness neither in this world nor in the next. Therefore, one who has renounced the fruits of his action, whose doubts are destroyed by transcendental knowledge, and who is situated firmly in the self, is not bound by works, O conqueror of riches. Therefore the doubts which have arisen in your heart out of ignorance should be slashed by the weapon of knowledge. Armed with yoga, stand and fight. There is no use in simply going through the writings of great scholars. But one should try to adopt at least a few points of the teachings of great scholars. By adopting these methods, we can live in a wonderful world. That wonderful world will be free from all kinds of egos, jealous and other unwanted fights. I thank Almighty and Swamiji for giving me opportunity to share my thoughts on Spirituality. By the same blessings, we will meet in the nest issue.

Swamiji sri selvam siddhar

The Great Sage Couples of India.
India is very famous for the religions. There lived a lot of Rishis or Sages. They lived in the forests. Theydid a lot of Thapas. All of them had wives. These wives were called as “RishiPathnis”. Even though they lived together, they had no intrest towards the worldly life. Inthis issue we will see about three of those couples.
Arundati andVasishta.
Vasishta is one of the Saptarishis of this Manvantara. He is the son of Lord Brahma and the Rajaguru of the Suryavamsha or Soalr dynasty. Arundathi was his wife. He is the author of Vasisht Samhita a treatise on electional astrology. He and his family are glorified in a hymn in the Rig Veda.
Once Lord Rama, the son of Dasaratha returned after completing a pilgrimage of holy places. He was saddened at the trials that a human has to undergo.  Dasaratha called Rama to his palace and asked what is bothering Him. Rama then explained his  disenchantment with worldly things and expressed sadness at the miserable life as a worldly man. Then Sage Vasishta started answering the questions poed by Lord Rama. This is the context and content of the scripture called “Yoga Vasishta”.
Once King Kalmashapada was going in his chariot. Sakthi, Vasishta’s son encountered the chariot in the forest. The rules demanded that a chariot always give way to saints, old men, men carrying a burden, pregnant women, etc. But King Kalmashapada ordered Sakthi to move away from the path. Sakthi cursed that the king to become a Raksasha (demon). The king became a rakshasa and true to his character lost all sight of righteousness and seeked Sakthi and killed him. Vasishta was saddened at the turn of events especially since Sakthi’s wife Adrushyanti, was pregnant. In a few days she gave birth to a son. Vasishta named him Parashara.
Once when Adrushyanti was gathering twings in the forest. she came across the raksasha.  Adrushyanti was scared. Vasishta uttered a few syllables and Kalmashapada could not do anything. He then gave the true form to Kalmashapada. When Parashara wanted to seek revenge Vasishta adviced him not to do so. This showed the level of perfection that Sage Vasishta had attained
Anusuya and Atri
Sage Atri is one of the Saptarishis in the current Manvantara and a son of Brahma. He is one among the Sages who propounded the sacred thread (Poonal). Sage Atri’s wife is Anusuya, an embodiment of chastity. He is considered to be one of the great discoverers of sacred mantras. Atri Samhita and Atri Smriti are two works of the great sage.
Sage Atri made a great tapas on the Kula Mountains. This caused the whole world to start burning. Brahma-Vishnu-Maheswara were pleased and appeared before the Sage and asked what he wanted. Sage Atri asked them to be their son. Hence they were born as Dattatreya, Chandraartri and Krishnantri.
Once the Trinity decided to test the chastity of Anusuya. They came to her house as Brahmins and requested for food. They conditioned that, the food be served to them that she should be naked while serving. Anusuya agreed without any hesitation. In a split second, she converted the Brahmins into children and offered food to them in naked. The Trinity regained their original form on requesting Anusuya. Such was the power of Anusuya’s chastity. Since she gave food to the children, she was bound to become their mother.
Lord Rama during his 14 year exile visited Atri Maharishi’s ashram near the Mandakini river. It was Sage Atri who showed Lord Rama the way to the Dandakaranya forest. Anusuya explained to Sita about the importance and siugnificance of Satitva. Anusuya’s devotion to the Lord can be understood through the couplet she composed. It meant “I am making this humble request with my folded hands never-ever abandon me from your feet by changing my mind”.
Renuka and Jamadagni
Jamadagni was a descendent of Sage Bhrigu. His wife was Renuka. His sons are Sushena,Vasu, Viashvavasu and Parashurama. Jamadagni engaged deeply in study and obtained the entire posession of the Vedas.Jamadagni’s mother, Satyavati, was daughter of King Gadhi, a Kshatriya. The Vishnu Purana relates that when Satyavati was pregnant, her Brahman husband, Richika, prepared a concoction for her to eat for the purpose of securing that her son should be born with the qualities of a Brahman. He also gave another concoction to her mother that she might bear a son with the character of a warrior. The women changed the messes, and so Jamadagni, the son of Richika, was born as a warrior-Brahman, and Vishvamitra, son of the Kshatriya Gadhi, was born as a priest.
Renuka was an embodiment of chastity. This chastity enabled her to perform feats others coudnt imagine. Everyday she used to bring water from the river in a pot made of unbaked clay. One day while she was fetching the water from the river a handsome Gandharva named Chitraratha was passing by in a chariot. For a split second Renuka was infatuated for the handsome being. This weakened her  powers and the pot dissolved in the river. Afraid to go back she waited near the riverbed. Sage  Jamadagni through his powers came to know of all that had happened. He called his sons and asked them to go and behead Renuka. None of the sons were willing to do it except for Parashurama. The other sons were turned to stone. Parashurama went and beheaded his mother with the axe. He was the embodiment of obidiency. Jamadagni was pleased and told Parashurama to ask for boons. Parashurama asked that his mother be brought back to life and that his brothers be revived.
In the next issue we will know about some more sages and rishis of Hinduism.

Disciples Discretions of Adhi Shankara

There were several notable disciples to Adhi Shankara. They have left their “Path” to this world, which is showing the light of torch for the welfare of the human beings. We are now going to find the light of their torch in the forms of words.

No 1:
This world is a mirage with false appearance. The omnipresence is the Real Nature, and truth. Don’t be with the egoistic thinking that the money, possession, wealth and relatives will be permanent and ever be yours. The mighty time will wipeout these things within seconds of a minute.

No 2:
While the seasons are changing the worldly life comes to an end. Time is playing as day and night, morning and evening; winter and summer. When the life comes to an end the air named “soul” leaves the physique; but the air called “desire” don’t leave even then.

No 3:
Atleast here after join and have relationship with pious people. When a person gets old age, disease like paralysis may attack him. Who would support that person when he looses his balance and falls down! Either that fellow’s wealth comes to help him at that stage? Even with the credibility as wife, does she could? One should go further and reach the Bank of birthlessness and deathlessness.

No 4:
When a person gets old age he looses all his teeth. That person’s head becomes bold. His physical streangth passes away. His physique becomes like a piece of “wood”. In that stage he supports his body weight through a hand–stick. The head will be with grey hair for a few. Without the balance of body they do walk. Even then that person never detaches from his desire and attraction of worldly things.
                                                                                                                                      -Sri.Thodakachariya.

No 5:
A fellow saint grows his hair like threads as if that of a rope. Another one removes the hair completely. One more saint wears the dress of the saint hood. A peculiar saint shaves half of his head. These are fearful appearances. None of these saints have received the vision of God. They are blind even though they have the eyes. They pretend as “saints”; but they are also in need to feed their stomach.
                                                                                                                        - Sri Padmapathaacharya

No 6:
When the sunsets and night comes. One saint, not tolerating the chillness. He closes his jaws and folds his knee’s joints. When the sun arises that saint performs ‘Homa’ with fire. During the midnoon the sun light scorches his back side of the shoulder. Then he begs for his food by raising his hands. He uses to sleep under the shadow of the tree. Even that Person has not thrown away the rope of passion named Desire and attraction.
-Sri.Hasthamalakaacharya

No 7:
One may take bath at the adjunction of Ganges and Jamuna. Another may take bath in the Holy River “Ganges”. One may visit holy places through out the country. Another one may practice several penances. Some another may donate money for the sake of poor. Even that person if he had not matured with enlightenment, he could not attain “Wisdom”. That person, as per all religious norms even if he takes hundreds of births, he could not attain wisdom.
- Sri.Subothacharya.

No 8:
Which is the thing that made for one’s comfort? For one, who had strong renunciation and has no languish for worldly pleasures. That kind of person resides under the shadows of trees and sleeps on plain floor.  That person wears the skin of “Deer” for his waist. That person gets benefit for next world or bliss for no rebirth.
- Sri.Sureshvarachariya.

No 9:
Any person who has no contacts with others as well with his relatives – A person who renounces worldly pleasures even then enjoys limited worldly happiness. A person who indulges in meditative practices- that person, if whole mindedly concentrated with the Almighty at any circumstances – That person enjoys the ever lasting divinely – pleasure in the three phases of times (past, present and future). That person gets freedom from punishment of life and death.

No 10:
When birth occurs death comes. When death occurs birth comes, Again and Again one have to suffer in the womb of a mother. Again the mother’s abdomen is the cradle or birth bed. This cycle has no end oh Lord! You are the saviour from this criteria. With kindness and mercy, save from the ocean of Birth.

No 11:
A person may behave like a mad man, the same person will cajole, like a child. That person may ‘Wear’- worn out clothes found in the street. His activities can’t be explained as pure or unpure; bad or good sin or good deed. It would look like an exceptional law. To those kinds of saints, one should give respect and obey him.
                                                                                                                                       Sri Nithyanandhacharya

No 12:
When a person dreams something about, joyful or sorrowful happenings, it occurs. When the whole human life transists or takes one form in to another form. Truly this world has no substance. Everything comes and goes in imagination; like that this life is in a dream state.
Ask yourself “Where from I came?
Who is the mother in this birth?
Who is the father before this birth?
Who is the third person or enemy?
Leave this world on the title of creator’s burden one and all are bound to obey the Almighty or Nature’s formation.

Commander selvam siddhar

OM NAMASHIVAYA!
OM NAMO NARAYANAYA!!

PEACE LOVE JOY

This is dedicated to  His Holiness Sri Selvam Siddhar
and Hindu Temple of Georgia & Family.

We Salute to all Saints, Gurujis, Teachers, Maharshis,
Sages and God/Self realised persons of this world
without whom's Teachings and Guidance our life seems
to have no meaning.

My respect to all Divine religions of this world which
spread God's message, unconditional love, peace and
make this world a place of
 Joy(Paradise).

WHO AM I to write something on Peace, Love and Joy
which all miraculous creatures of the UNIVERSAL MIND
or GOD or NATURE or whichever
name you like to call.

This is not to find fault with GOD's Divine Creatures.
We wonder seeing, feeling, perceiving and imagining
this MIRACULOUS UNIVERSE and
surrender fully to HIM. As I am transformed from
non-believer to a man of fully devoted to God service
for the rest of life and having
some understanding of life because of the so many
Guru's divine spiritual words(read/heared) and by the
Grace of GOD experiencing some real peace,
having unconditional love to all creatures without
judgement and Joy(bliss or happiness) going in on
meditation for sometime and after getting an
opportunity
to write by the grace of God through Sri Selvam
siddhar I started writing. If you feel that you have
already achieved peace, love and joy
like the many realised persons of this world you
better stop here and BE AS YOU ARE.

Everybody or every creature of this miraculous God's
creation is Unique and Divine. This Universe, nOt even
single atom, exists withot HIM.

This is only the message of those saints and sages of
the past and present as understood by me. This is not
with the desire to change the world but
to give sometime to change ourselves. If you have some
time to GOD also you will have  peace, love and joy.
Read divine scriptures like The Holy Geeta,The
Upanishads, the teachings of Self-Realised
souls(Paramahansa Yogananda, Swami Sivananda, Sri
Aurobindo and so on), The Holy Bible, The Quran and
Buddha's teaching or whichever
you like to understand God and Life and where we are
in this Universe or who Am I. So the credit of this
writing is not mine. The Body, Mind and Intelligence
of VishnuShivapriyan is fully surrendered to That
Super Power which has created this Universe.

God is Love. So it is with love this VishnuShivapriyan
writes . Sharing whatever you have will multiply this
UNIVERSAL law.The UNIVERSAL CONSCIOSNESS has
created everything with a purpose. VishnuShivapriyan
purpose now in life, by the grace god, is to spread
peace, unconditional love and divine Joy.
Because of our ignorance we make paradise mother earth
a hell to live.
Ethanai Kodi Inbam thanthai Iraiva only comes to my
mind.
As you sow so you reap. If you want peace, love and
joy in this world, sow and show whatever peace love
and joy you have in all possible ways.
For every action there is equal and opposite reaction.
Keeping this law in mind you decide your action in
this world.

For a ignorant mind God is No where. For an
intelligent mind God is Nowhere. God is everywhere and
in everything, all powerfull, without beginning and
end,
changeless in everchanging Universe, spread in all
directions endlessly, within and without and HE is
smaller than an atom and bigger than your imagined
world
and Universe.
Though VishnuShivapriyan read a lot of spiritual books
for more than 15years, VishnuShivapriyan started
meditating practically with the Mantra
"OM MAMASHIVAYA " as advised by Siddhar Sri
Dharmalingam Swamigal present avtar of Siddhar Sri
Kagapujandar for some days and later included Divine
Mantra
" OM NAMO NARAYANAYA" with that. Everything happens
according to God's plan. He is Director of this Cosmic
worldly drama and we are only actors and spectators.
Within some days VishnuShivapriyan left 25 years of
cigarete smoking habit withot any urge to smoke again.
Now VishnuShivapriyan feels accepting life as given
by God and this life itself a great wealth to relish
not to mourn. VishnuShivapriyan now feel more
peaceful. VishnuShivapriyan now able to have
unconditional
love with everybody without jealousy and judgement. My
life changed from the usual materialistic life of this
world to joyful spritual  dedicated to
God's service life. VishnuShivapriyan got the
opportunity to write as  wished. VishnuShivapriyan
gives below one poem written some time back in a
different
mode of life.
       ONLY GOD KNOWS

I wonder why we forget the Father of the
 Universe;
I wonder why we forget the Owner of the
 Universe;
I wonder why we compete with one another
 for material things;
I wonder why we forget the real Owner, the
 LORD;
I wonder why we are searching happiness
 everywhere
And in everything except God who is inside
 us too;
I wonder why we are ignorant of miraculous
 Creation of GOD;
I wonder why our desire is endless except
 God's desire;
I wonder why we are not happy with what we
 have;
I wonder when unconditional Love to the
 world going to spread;
I wonder now Who is going to spread God's
 message to the world;
I wonder who knows the Answer;ONLY GOD
 KNOWS!!!.

If you find something intersting in this will
continue...

MAY LOVE PEACE AND JOY PREVAIL EVERYWHERE. GOD BLESS
US.

The Music Genius – Bali Brahmbhatt

Born on July 6th, the Zodiac calendar calls him for a Cancer. A true artist, a famous music director, a renowned playback singer, a superb dancer/actor, and a superb on-stage master of ceremonies - - his name, Bali Brahmbhatt. As a composer, he takes full rights on Pyaar Zindagi Hai (2001). As far as soundtracks, Bali fully steals the show in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999). Don’t forget Bali is remarkably known for his dance numbers on Hindi celluloid. Bali has indefinitely served as master of ceremonies globally for numerous live stage shows. Recent ones being, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, and Abhijeet. Chitrmala, just a few months back, spotted him in his unforgettable dialogue in Atlantic City, NJ where he hosted the live concert with Abhijeet (India’s top leading male singer). Here, Ms. Nilima Mehra of Chitrmala said, “I thought I was the leading master of ceremonies on stage, but from your performance today, you most definitely take the cake”. To which, Bali replied, “you are no less – I’ll never forget that you are a superb interviewer”.
Last year Bali walked into the studio of Chitrmala (courtesy Mr. Melwin Quadros). Upon seating, the camera and lights turned on, and Bali’s mellifluous voice said, “Tere Bin Jeena…”. He was amazing. This number has been a worldwide hit. At this setting, Ms. Nilima Mehra took a rather long and historical interview which we shall post in a future issue of Siddhi Times. Bali’s latest release is Banjara. Here, his long red woven jacket and his naturally sexy voice is mind blowing. This music video was shot in Muscat, Oman. Some months back, Chitrmala had full rights to air Banjara (courtesy Melwin Quadros).
Brace yourselves – as this husky artist is getting ready to pay a visit to the Washington D.C. Metro Area. To be exact,, May 11th 2008 (Mother’s Day) at the Lisner Auditorium of George Washington University – this event is being hosted by Indu Entertainment. Get to know Bali Brahmbhatt closely – don’t forget to date him on this Mother’s Day and enjoy his illustrious performance. Gee!! What a treat for the Washingtonians!

 Vish Yoga ?

Vish Yoga —Vish Yoga is formed when Saturn and Moon are together or when Sat aspects Moon.It is not a good yoga and person born under this yoga can do harm of persons represented by the house in which Saturn is placed. Shani and Chandra Yuti, generally considered as VISH YOGA (Poison Combination). It does creates bad effect on Mother and her health particularly. But more importantly see the 4th House of the Native for Mother Son / Mother and Daughter relations.

If Saturn is with Mars / Rahu in 4th House or making Kendra / Samsaptak Yoga like 4-10 combination then there are much more chances that it will create rift between them. This normally leads to separation in the relation. A very painful patch for family in general.

If Saturn and Moon are in Yuti where the distance between the Planets is less than 5 degrees then generally it gives worst effects. It can make the Native emotionally and mentally weak. Saturn poisons the Natural emotions of Moon causing lack of Expression and Emotions from Native .These people are Hard working in Nature but success comes after the Age of 30-32. They generally land in to Service Industry after series of Failures.

They are Strict in Discipline and make a Good Administrator. This Yuti gives Bad effects during Each Others Dasa and Antar Dasas. It reflects losses of the House where both the Planets are located. eg. If this Yuti is in 5th House then, Chandra Mahadasa with Shani Antardasa or vice versa will give Bad effect to Native, which leads to Failure in Exams, Sudden Change in Education Streams, Failure in Love Affair or Problem to Son/Daughter of Native.

History of Shani dev

Shani is a Deva and son of Surya (the Hindu Sun God) and his wife Chhaya (Shadow goddess) and hence also known as Chayyaputra. He is the elder.brother of Yama, the Hindu God of death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. Interestingly, Surya’s two sons Shani and Yama judge. Shani gives us the results of one’s deeds through one’s life through appropriate punishments and rewards; Yama grants the results of one’s deeds after death.[1] It is said that when Shani opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, which clearly denotes the impact of Shani on astrological charts. He is known as the greatest teacher. Shani dev is said to be very harmful to those who follow the path of betrayal, backstabbing and unjust revenge. He is known in Hindu scriptures as the greatest trouble giver as well as the greatest well wisher. He is depicted dark in color, clothed in black; holding a sword, arrows and two daggers and variously mounted on a black crow

Financially, the native will face more expenditure than inflow of income. Unnecessary financial problems may crop up. On health front also, it will affect the native. Lack of happiness, heavy tensions, eye problems, severe mental tension, unnecessary travels and at times, the native will face problems from the near relatives. Influences the domestic front as well as the business front, During the second phase, th native’s family will be disturbed. He will undergo a long journey. He will be haunted by enemies and some of the natives may also get separated. Financial problems, social dishonor, lack of good friends and over all the native will be under severe stress, children, family, health, and physical suffering or may even indicate the death of the native. During this period, the native may lack of happiness. Loss of position is to be noted. Expenditure will be more than income. Inflow of money will be there but it is not suffice. Astrology & Shani dev

According to Vedic astrology, Shani Bhagavan is one of the nine Navagraha or planets. Shani is considered to be the strongest malefic and a stern teacher who represents patience, effort, endeavor, and endurance; and who brings restrictions and misfortunes. However, a favorably-placed Shani on the horoscope of a person stands for a strong career, healthy life and everything positive for that person. In fact, a well-placed Shani in one’s horoscope is something every astrology-believing Hindu hopes for, as no other ‘graha’can bestow what a favorable Shani can. Shani placed “unfavorably”, on the other hand, denotes troubles in all of the above. Shani is much feared by those Hindus who believe in astrology, as the “malefic” effects of his being unfavorably placed can be quite severe.

However, it is to be remembered that any pleasure or pain that befalls a person during Shani’s influence is not arbitrary; rather, it is the result of the person’s own karma, now being manifested in the “presence” of Shani. Thus an “unfavorably-placed” Shani brings about the harsh results of one’s bad karma, and vice-versa. The diseases which Lord Shani gives are decay, constriction, poor blood supply, atrophy, etc. and at mental level narrow mind, low thinking. These diseases need to be cured by Lord Shani rules and regulations only.

The planet Shani or Saturn revolves around the Sun in about 30 years, which means it passes through all the 12 rashis or moon signs in 30 years. Thus Shani Bhagavan spends on an average about two and half years in each rashi or moon sign. This movement of Shani through the moon signs carries great importance in Hindu astrology and horoscope predictions. The effect of Shani starts when it enters the previous rashi/moonsign to one’s own birth rashi and stops when it leaves the rashi /moonsign after one’s birth rashi. The total period of 7.5 years (2.5 years × 3) is called Saadesaati or “Elanata Shani”, and is typically a period of great difficulty. When it occurs for a person foregoing Shani Maha Dasha the malefic effects of the planet are highly pronounced. It is said that Shani can reduce even a king to a pauper during such period.Shani rules the signs Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius), is exalted in Tula (Libra) and is debilitated in Mesha (Aries). Mercury, Venus, Rahu, Ketu are considered friendly towards Shani or Saturn, while the Sun, Moon and Mars are enemies. Guru or Jupiter maintains neutral relations with Shani. Shani is the lord of three nakshatras or lunar mansions: Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.

Shani Bhagavan has the following associations: his color is black or dark blue, metal is iron and gemstone is Blue Sapphire. His element or tattva is air, direction is west (where the sun sets and darkness begins) and he rules all seasons. The traditional foods for Shani are sesame seeds or black gram, black lentils his flower is the violet and he is linked to all black animals and all trees that are considered useless and ugly.Shani rules over masses. Without the planet’s blessings in one’s horoscope, a mass following is difficult to come by. It is said that an exalted Saturn in the ascendant (or Lagna) of one’s horoscope awards one with such leadership position entailing fame from and recognition among masses. Moreover, such people are said to have high commitment and perseverance for the task at hand.

On the other hand, a debilitated Saturn in one’s horoscope makes one’s ‘Karma’ weak and such individual with debilitated Saturn is said to have poor commitment and perseverance towards duties and hence suffers in the process of completing one’s karmic obligations.

Hence ‘Moksha’ is difficult to come by without Shaniswara’s blessings in one’s horoscope. Lord Shaniswara is also known as Needhiman(Judge). He only troubles the person during his dasa for the wrong doings. Even in Shani Dosha, if a person is Righteous & Devoted he is sure to come out of this period without any ill effects.
Lord Shaniswara is more known for his Blessings than his ill effects. No other graha is comparable with Lord Shani in terms of blessings. He showers with his blessings at the end of his dasha. His Adi-Devata is Prajapati and Pratyadi-Devata is Yama. Lord Shani tests the person patience, He tries to correct our immoral acts by creating frustrations, and delays. In the end He makes one conscious enough to understand the mistakes. He removes ignorance from mind by punishment, the benefits that He matures the soul of being and person turns copper to gold from within i.e. he begins to understand the Truths of life, the futility of his actions done out of ignorance. One comes to understand after Lord Shani periods that not much is in control of human beings. It is all divine acting on human beings through the agents of Gods. Lord Shani is the greatest purifier, everything false will perish and only Truth will shine, that is His message.
