The sun is the soul of universe. Sunlight is the basic source of all life and energy on earth. Sun-worship and the love of basking in the Sun date back to antiquity.

COLORS ARE ALL AROUND US. WE ARE BATHED IN IT EVERY WHERE, BUT IF WE ARE UNAWARE OF IT AND UNCONSCIOUS OF ITS INFLUENCE, ITS WEALTH IS NOT PROPERLY UTILIZED.

"Let there be light" was one of the first comments of the creator of the universe. In the year 1666 Issac Newton discovered that sunlight is a combination of  Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet colors of the rainbow(VIBGYOR), which he called a spectrum. The different visible colors are due to their different wavelengths. The three colors on one extreme i.e. Violet, Indigi and Blue are cooling and soothing in nature. The three colors on other extreme i.e. Yellow, Orange and Red are hot and stimulating in nature. The green color in the middle of spectrum is a harmonizer color. It maintains the equilibrium between the hot and cold colors.

COLOR

It is the property of light. It is the ability to receive the vibrations of the light through the eyes. It is the most attenuated form of energy. Color is all around us. We are bathed in it everywhere, but if we are unaware of it and unconscious of its influence, its wealth is not properly utilized. The trinity of colors , The Red, Yellow, and Blue , finds representation in the three great elements of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen.

CHROMOTHERAPY

Chromo therapy is also known as heliotherapy, solar therapy or colortherapy means healing with the color or through the use of  thecolor. It may be said to be the science which uses different colors , visible or invisible to the human eyes, to change diseased vibrations into healthy vibrations.

According to Ayurvedic system of medicine, there are three Doshas(Tri-doshas) which are as under.

1. Vata (Ether + Air)

2. Pitta (Fire)

3. Kapha (Water + Earth)

Colors of five sense organs, when examined with prism are as below

Eyes - Red, Skin - Violet, Nose tip - Green, Tongue - Orange, Ears - Blue

PRINCIPLE

The general principle in color healing is to supply the color which the individual lacks or to reduce a too abundant color. According to the Ayurvedic system of treatment , there are three types of disturbances(doshas) in the body, i.e. (1) Vat(Wind) - It is indicated by accumulation of morbid matter or toxic matter or foreign matter. It is balanced by Green color, (2) Pit(Bile) - It is indicated by excess of heat in the body. It is balanced by cold colors (Violet, Indigo and blue), (3) Kaph(Phelgm) - It is indicated by the excess of cold in the body, It is balanced by hot colors   Yellow, Orange and Red.

Red charged oil is used for external applications and Orange - charged water is used for internal uses.  The hot colors are never used in empty stomach.  Only 1/4th cup of charged water should be taken fifteen minutes after each meal. These colors should not be used in fevers, inflammation, diarrhoea or excessive heat in the body.

HEALING POWER OF BLUE COLOR

The blue ray is one of the greatest antiseptics in the world. It is cooling and soothing color. The blue color controls the throat center. It can stop bleeding of lungs, dysentery, inflammations of bowls etc. Violent and maniacal patient become calm and quiet when kept in blue radiated rooms.

Blue light has relieved many cases of high blood pressure. Blue oil massage over the crown centre and the brow centre, induces sound sleep.  Foods containing blue color like Blue-berries (Phalsa), Blue Plums(Jamun) etc. should be included in the treatment.

It is also a muscle and tissue builder.It has been found that Green affects the whole system and is particularly beneficial for sympathetic nervous system. Astrology is the study of influence of movements of stars, etc. on human affairs, whereas Astronomy is a science of heavenly bodies.It is needless to mention that one need not to dilate into the science of the heavenly bodies, as it is very crystal clear and as sure as the Sun rises in the east at a paritcular time and sets in the west at a particular time. So in the case of another heavenly body-Moon, which also has its fixed rotation. This is evident in the Holy Quran.

"And the Sun runneth on unto a resting place for him .That is the measuring of the mighty, the wise. And for the Moon, we have appointed mensions till she returns like and old shrivelled palm leaf. It is not for the sun to overtake the Moon, nor doth the nights outstrips the day. They float each in an orbit." (Surah X XX VI. verse 38,39,and 40). These verse prove the well ordained for well-knit mechanism of Allah's creation. At another place He says, "He is who appointed the Sun a splendour and the Moon a light and measured for her stages that he might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. Allah has created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge (Surah X verse 5)." He further commands, "He is the cleaver of the day break, and he hath appointed the night for stillness, and the Sun and the Moon for reckoning. That is the measuring of the mighty, the wise "(Surah VI verse 96).

We find that in the Holy Quran, in several verses, Almighty has asked and encouraged mankind to look into and ponder over the objects of his creation, including the heaven, the stars and the Moon, in orders the understand his signs and thereby his supreme might, glory and greatness.

"Say (O Muhammad) : Behold what is in the heaven and the earth! But revelations and warnings avail not folk who will not perceive." (Surah Yunus : verse 101)."Say (O Muhammad) : Travel in the land and see how he originated creation, so will Allah produce a later creation, for Allah has power over all things." (Surah Al-Ankabut : verse 20)."Do they not reflect in their own minds? Allah created not the heaven and the earth, and that is between them, save with truth and for a destined end; you are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord (At the Resurrection)! (Surah Al-Rum : verse 8).

"And verily in the heaven we have set mansions of the stars and we have beautified it for beholders."

(Surah Al-Hijri; verse 16)."And he hath constrained the night and the day and the sun and Moon to be services unto you, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Lo! herein indeed are portents for people who sense." (Surah Al-Nahi : verse 12).It is further observed that the Quaranic narration into practice is observed in the Sun and the Moon eclipse at appropriate time and the day, as also occurrence of the seasons.It is therefore, irrational to call Astronomy a science and Astrology hocus pocus.Mention in regard to Astrology or the influence of plants and stars is found in the Holy Quran in connection with Pharaoh, who was warned of the birth of Prophet Moses (A. S.) which took place.

As a consequence of the prediction by the court astrologers of King Namrood who predicted birth of Prophet Ibrahim (A. S.) so much so that they predicted accurately the conception of Prophet Ibrahim (A. S.) in spite of the best efforts of the King Namrood to prevent it.Can there be doubt to regard Astrology as a science which is just application of Astronomy ?Astrology is more than 6000 years old and the movement of the plants and stars are very accurately measured; there cycles are fixed by the ancient seers. Hence, the commentaries prove it's prior existence.There have been many occasions in the past 2,000 years when astrological predictions have come true. Hippocrates predicted a plague swept the city, Alexander the Great was warned by the astrologers to flee from the walls of Babylon where his evil stars prevailed, but like Hitler he took their advice only when it suited him, entered the city, and met his end.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, opined "A physician who was ignorant of Astrology was not worthy to be called a physician. He had no right to heal anyone."

One of the jurists of repute, Imam Shafee (R. A.) actually learnt this science at the hands of experts. He had once upon a time predicted birth of child to a person after seeing his chart with a mole in his left thigh, within twenty - seven days and shall remain alive for 24 days and shall expire.

This was related by HajrAllamaIbnAsqalani (R. A.) Imam Shafayee who was also expert in the science of Physiognomy, as he could read Imam Bukhari, when asked by his teacher, Imam Hameedee.(Naq - she - Kokan, Mumbai, December, 1987 issue, Page 6).

Another Muslim scholar AllamaMaudoodi, Justifies Palmistry as one of the branches of Astrology, for channellising human resources, while replying to various enthusiasts reproduced in the magazine Tajalli published from Deoband, in the issue of October and November, 1972 on page 72 of this issue.

Some of our learned theologians equate Astrology with the knowledge of the unseen (IIme-Gaib). IIme-Gaib is revelation which is corroborated by another verse "this is of the tidings of things hidden." (Surah III, verse 44). Yet another scholar MaulaviShabbir Ahmed Usmani, writes in his commentary on verse no. 59 Surah, VI that the key of unseen and treasures are only with Allah, and only Allah endows endows out of it whom he so wishes and hence, it cannot take the peace of Astrology which is based on calculations of the planets and stars. As such, it cannot be equated with the knowledge of the unseen (IIme-Gaib).

It is a matter of much regret that in this age of amazing scientific advancement, the Muslims are lagging behind and have left it to others to make scientific investigations in the field of Astronomy, space and other related sciences. Pursuit of such knowledge, it would be seen from the verses quoted in this article is in keeping with the teachings of the Holy Quran and uphold the truth of the revelations made therein.

Indeed, Muslims scholars and scientists have made significant contributions in the field of astrology in the past. But the present offers a greater challenge and opportunity.

Achievement of such knowledge not only gives greater insight into the objects of Allah's creation, Which he terms as his signs, but also helps to develop greater conviction and faith in the supreme glory and greatness of Almighty Allah, the Creator.

If there is a basic psychological conflict between the two partners, sex education cannot be of much help. Sex is undoubtly the foundation of love, but sex alone can never sustain love. Loving is a creative act and left entirely to chance, It cannot sufficiently grow.

In examining marriage compatibility from hand-reading start with the skin texture. The surface examination of the skin texture is made by the holding the hand palm downwards and feeling the back of the hand by thumb. The skin texture may either be soft, or normal, or coarse. The soft texture indicates developed aesthetic sense, and the coarse skin betrays the lack of it. It must be remembered that soft skin is no guarantee for high morals and the coarse skin, by no means an indication of low morals.

The next important point to note is the thickness of the hand and its consistency. The thickness of the hand indicates the strength of emotional factors; the feeling capacity is judged from this thickness. Generally speaking, a man with thick hands has better chances of making marriages successful than a man with thin hands. The man with thin hand may lack the warmth of heart, his relational tendencies accentuate beyond limits, and he will be cold and excessively calculative even in matters of love. But a woman with thick hands may ba a difficult proposition in the case of a great number of males. She may subordinate her reasons to her emotions and the man may find it difficult to cope with her emotional demands.

Thickness or thinness of hand is rather very closely connected with its consistency. Consistency is judged by the holding the hand tightly by both the hands and pressing the palm by the thumbs at various palces in order to judge the resistance of the hand muscles. The consistency of the hand may broadly be divided into three types: hard, elastic and soft.Consistency is hard when the hand muscles do not yield to thumb pressure and to be composed of hard massive substance. This type of consistency always betrays a hard, unbending, primitive type of emotional quality. Elastic consistency is that in which the muscles when pressed offer somewhat less resistance. When this type of consistency is found, it should be treated as a good indication in any hand. When the hand muscles offer little or almost no resistance, the consistency is known to be soft. The flabby consistency, in which the substance of the muscles can be squeezed, is the extreme variety of soft consistency. This type of consistency betrays indolence and accentuated sensuousness.

Thumb formation tells us quite a bit about the quality of love one is likely to possess. Remembering that absolute monogamy or polygamy is not to be found in human beings, much useful knowledge about this aspect can be obtained from the thumb. The strong thumb means strong sentimental attributes. Sentimental attributes should not be confused with emotional attributes. A person with a strong sentimental attribute is one whose love is composed of a number of strong emotive motives directed and concentrated towards one individual. This person will love a woman not merely for sex attraction, but his love will be composed of a number of diverse factors. His sexual and other emotional impules will be oriented towards the objects of his love. With a weak thumb, the position will be otherwise.

A well-shaped thumb speaks of polish and decency in love making. With a coarse thumb, the motive will be sex in its instinctive, coarse form.If this thumb is supple, that is, if it is a flexible over the joint, it indicates shifting sentiments. Such persons are generous in love and give more for small returns in love. They are splendid lovers--, so long they love. The trouble with them is that they find it difficult to keep their sentiments fixed on one subject for a long period. Stiff thumb promises better stability and constancy in love and sentiments. A heavy nail phalange makes the person rather a bully particularly on occasions of emotional upsets. If the second phalange is wasted, it betokens tactful foresight which shapes behavior in a well-defined pattern.

Should the person with a supple thumb be avoided in matrimony? Not at all. Thumb formation certainly indicates monogamic and polygamic aptitudes in persons, but while drawing conclusions one must remember that both these conditions differ not in kind but in degree. I submit that the approach to monogamous or polygamous dispositions as good or evil is not correct. They are two different ways of emotional expression. Barring the pronounced cases, which can easily be detected from the hand traits in general and from the thumb formation in particular, monogamy and polygamy depend much on the circumstances and environments.

We must be able to appreciate the complex traits of personality and should be able to detect the relative distinctions. A man of shifting sentiments may or may not be mech sensual, but the difference in his psychological composition from the former type lies in the fact that his sentiments and love for a woman tend to shift rather quickly and easily. A person with a strong well shaped stiff thumb may have a number of sexual affairs depending on the nature and circumstances of his life, but he will never give others the same or similar position in his heart which he gives to his beloved. On the other hand, supple thumb denotes the love for variety and also an easy generous disposition which is ever prepared to give and take confidence quite easily. Such a type of person should be allowed to develop new interests. If his desire for variety is thus fed, he will remain faithful; and he will be better person to live with in daily routine than the one with a strong, stiff thumb.

The shape and build of the fingers is also important. If the fingers are slender and flexible over the joints, it is a very positive indication of lack of restrictive control over the instinctive desires. In a woman's hand, such fingers with a weak supple thumb bespeak of a nervy person predisposed to polygamy. If the Head and Life are also widely separated at the beginning, the useful inhibitive female tendencies are also lacking. Add to this, a jutting little finger, we have a picture of a woman of promiscuous disposition resenting any restrictive control whatsoever.

The Girdle of Venus indicates sensitivity in the emotional plane. The bumps on the finger tips also indicate sensitivity on the intellectual plane which may sometime find expression in fastidiousness. If the hand is filled with numerous thin lines going on all directions, it indicates nervous sensitivity. The Via Lasciva betrays marked love for excitement. If the main lines of the hand are thin and well traced, it is an indication of moment refinement.

If the heart line is widely curved, it indicates masculine directional trends emotions. If the heart line is straight, it shows feminine directional expressions of emotions. The term masculine signifies a direct, physical approach. The straight type of heart line shows passiveness in approach and fastidiousness. Mental stimulation is a prerequisite to physical stimulation. This does not mean that the person with a curve type of heart line has no aesthetic discrimination, that physical stimulation is all that he or she cares for, and that the person will receive mental satisfaction from anyone who is capable of giving physical stimulation. Nothing of this sort is implied. The curving of heart line has nothing to do with morality, and character.

The formation of the heart line should be judged in relation to the head line. If the head line is long and curves down deep into the Mount of Luna. It indicates a basic feminine, abstract and romantic mind. If this type of heart line associated with a straight type of heart line, physical approach without mental preparation will be very much repugnant to such persons. It will be difficult to bring this person down to facts life from the romantic ideas of love and sex.

If the Head line is straight, not very long and Heart line is curved, the person seldom loses sight of practical matters in romance. If the Head line is rather short and straight, you can be sure that the person's concept of beauty and appreciation of the beautiful is very much limited to the physical attributes. Such a man will insist that his wife must be beautiful first and everything afterwards. This is just a general deduction. It presupposes some desire for beautiful things, and a strong, masculine sexual urge. These are easily discernible from hand traits. If the hand is coarse and betrays lack of any aesthetic appreciation, the person will not care for a beautiful wife, but will insist that his wife should be quite useful in material life. Such persons will not hesitate to use their wives to achieve things in the material field.

Some of the answers to the general matrimonial problems will be found in the sex factor. Sex is the foundation of marriage. It is very necessary that the sexual demands of the partners do not vary too much. Sexual demands of men and women can never be alike. At best that can be complimentary.

If the hands of a man are pronouncedly thick, the Mount of Venus is well developed. the lifeline traces a wide curve round the Mount of Venus, we can immediately visualize that the sexual urges if the man must be vigorous and his demands for sexual satisfaction squarely met by his partner before she can expect to receive adjustments on his part. The mode and manner of the sexual satisfaction varies from time to time, because he cannot be reconciled if his partner insists on conventional time and postures.

But the sexual desires of woman are strongly inhibited by social mores. Young women rarely consider sex outside a romantic framework. Very few normal women can derive pleasure from sex act if no feeling of love is associated with it. Often the man with thick hands will think of sex without associating it with any feelings of love.

If the hands of women proposed to be married to the above type of a man, are rather thin, the mounts are flat, the lifeline in both the hands is narrowly traced thereby confining the Mount of Venus to a rather narrow space, we have a woman whose feelings and demands for sexual satisfaction are not the prime factors in her psychological make-up. She can neither be quickly stimulated for the act, nor can she regard sexual satisfaction as a measure of her mental satisfaction. With this type of woman, sexual compatibility is definitely a result and not the cause of emotional compatibility.

But the man whose sexual demands are strong will assert them in no uncertain manner. Sexual compatibility will be the cause and not the effect of the emotional compatibility if his case. He will take her attitude for coldness in love and a predisposition to frigidity.

Suppose the skin texture of the hands of the man is rather coarse and that of the woman, soft. The passions of this man will sleek more direct channels of expression, whereas the woman will be refined and insist on a more harmonious and aesthetic atmosphere before she can prepare herself to surrender. His approach will be crude and she will feel disgusted at the scant respect shown to her delicacy of mind.

If the skin texture of the hand is soft, it will modify his vigorous sexual demands to a great extent, and sublimate it, and he will be much more considerate for the feelings of his woman.

These rules of hand reading can be very usefully applied to predict marriage compatibility. Anyone can successfully make use of these rules, but following facts must be kept in view:

(1).  Marriage compatibility based on sexual and emotional compatibility is primarily a psychological subject. Never can be successful in predicting these matters without being familiar with the psychological principles involved. A fair knowledge of psychological from standard textbooks is an absolute necessity:

HAPPY MARRIAGE - AN ATHARVA VEDIC ASTROLOGICAL STUDY

MARRIAGE is an institution with varied association. In Hinduism and in the Catholic religion at least, marriage is taken to be an indissoluble and sacred institution. To these faiths, marriages are literally made in heaven. In some countries marriage is a contract and it is therefore capable of being dissolved. Even where the law of divorce is found on the statute book, some countries like the United Kingdom do not allow a divorce as far as the royal family is concerned. When we turn to astrology, we only know that marriages are largely governed by planetary dispositions. We do not think that astrology would sanction divorce or oppose it, since astrology is neither a legislature nor a judge. Astrology only enables us to make a marriage happy or otherwise.

Since the zodiac begins with Aries (Mesha). The natural seventh is Libra (Tula). The main indicators of marriage are Libra and its lord, as far as men are concerned. The seventh from Libra being Aries, the chief indicators of marriage for a woman are Aries and Mars. In a woman's chart, the Moon too must be taken into consideration since the menstrual period is regulated by Moon and Mars; and in a man's nativity Sun too must be examined carefully.

In a man's chart, we have to consider Libra and the 7th from the ascendant, Sun and Venus; and in a woman's we must note Aries and the seventh from the ascendant, Moon and Mars. The eighth houses from these govern the sex life; and therefore Scorpio for the men and Taurus for women has to be added to the list. Then the extra marital life is determined by the twelfth house from the ascendant; and in a man's chart, Pisces too need scrutiny while in a woman's Virgo too deserves a study. This might terrify one since all the houses and planets appear to get into the picture. But what is needed is to findout the strongest among the ascendant, Sun and Venus in a man's chart, and among the ascendant Moon and Mars in a woman's. The major scrutiny should be from this point only. The others are needed as corroborating or strengthening aids only.

An affliction to a planet or house arises from a conjunction with or an aspect by a planet that is a malefic by nature or by ownership or by both. If a conjunction with or an aspect by a benefic also operates, then we get mixed character of the house or planet.

A strong, well-placed and unaffiliated Venus gives a harmonious and balanced marital life of man. A similar Mars governs the balanced sex life of a woman. These are the two basic planets. Venus is to be examined with the Sun, and Mars with the Moon. The position of Venus in a male chart is to be compared with that of Mars in the wife's chart; and a similar comparison between the Sun in the Husband's chart and the Moon in the wife's is necessary. Whether they aspect one another, they are in square or trine to one another, or they are inimical to one another must be carefully noted. The next step is to see whether the Navamsa chart of the wife agrees with the Rasi chart of the husband, and whether the Rasi chart of the wife agrees with the Navamsa chart of the husband. These preliminary observations will be taken up for a scrutiny and a later stage. Now we have to consider the possible effects resulting from certain positions of the planets. In the following, he means and includes she also.

The Sun in the seventh indicates a successful marriage; and in the eighth a successful interest in the affairs where the strongest feelings are involved and in matters of sex. The moon in the seventh makes one change his attitude frequently towards those intimately related to him; and he hopes the marriage partner to be motherly. The eighth house position stimulates these interests. Mercury in the seventh can either advance or related reciprocity of feelings and emotions; and in the eighth he affects the emotions roused by others. Venus in the seventh is a very good indication of happy marriage and of the ability to live with others in peace and happiness. If this Venus is afflicted, there may be disappointment in this direction. In the eighth Venus secures a balanced sex life if it is not afflicted. Mars in the seventh makes one forceful in intimate relationships. If afflicted, it might bring about irritation and quarrels. In the eighth it makes sex life very important for the native. The seventh house Jupiter is very good for marriage life. In the eight it brings prosperity through marriage. Saturn in the seventh brings about frustration and disappointment in marriage, if it is afflicted. In the eighth, it makes one serious in matters concerning sex.

Of the various signs involved in a consideration of the problem of marriage, there are a few sensitive degrees which may be noted. All these refer to the Nirayana of Sidereal Zodiac only.( BASED ON MOON SIGN AND NOT SUN SIGN)

Aries: 1°, The sexual need is an inescapable necessity. This is likely to ruin one's self-respect. 10°, it gives rise to chaos and disorder in the household.  11° ,14°, It offers a happy marriage. 15°, one is fond of family and home, and yet faces domestic strife. 18°, one is fond of his family, but is really despotic and unscrupulous.  25°, there is a likelihood of being divided from the partner.   29°, it indicates happy marriage and perfect sociability. 30°, it is likely that estrangement from the partner and children follows.

Libra: 3°, it gives a generous heart.  8°, one allows himself or herself to be ruled unconditionally by the person he or she loves. In some cases we may find lust and delinquency.  15°, his behavior is determined by his sexual urge. Intrigues and adventures dominate his love affairs and she will quarrel over very paltry things. Sometimes lust may make him a criminal.  18°, one is unable to live without love; and there is faithfulness along with jealousy. 19°, there is strong sex urge which may develop into lust.  22°, it offers neither joy nor pleasure in life. 24°,  on his private life he is selfish and lustful, shameless and sensuous. 26°, there is an unbridled lustfulness, and he becomes a prey to wine, women and gambling. 29°, he is deeply attached to home.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, as the name implies, it mainly destroys resistance power of the body. Its virus (H I V) intermingle in blood & derive its diet from it.

In our blood the resistance cells are known as Lymphocytes. These Lymphocytes contain 50% to 60% T-Helper cells (T. H.),  T H cells on outer surface contain T-4 or CD-4 atom. Astrology is the study of human behavior and experience on the back drop of time and space. Astrology is a scientific study and application of the language of the heavenly bodies(planets and stars). These heavenly bodies are determined on the basis of astronomy and mathematics, are mapped in the form of a horoscope. Their specific position in the horoscope indicates specific happenings in the case of individuals. The main factors affecting the horoscope of any individual are Date of birth, Place of birth and exact time of birth. Whether the sun, the moon, the planets and stars themselves influence the terrestrial phenomena, or they only indicate such phenomena by their various dispositions, is immaterial. What is important to us is that variation in their disposition determine variations in the events on the earth, the correlation are very strong.

Actually Astrology starts where Astronomy ends. As far as human experiences are concerned both studies are complementing to each other. Astrological findings are based on the Astronomical and mathematical and biological principles.

Astrology is widely used all over the world. People use it in different forms according to region and culture of the area.

In Hindu Astrology, this system has been explained as space time connection. Within the space, there are four elements Air, Fire, Water and Earth each is therefore attributes, sattva , Raja and Tamasa and make up 12 divisions in the nature. So the zodiac in which earth and all the planets are imprisoned by gravitation and revolve around the sun is divided by 12 clusters of stars or signs of the zodiac. In Vedic astrology it is founded that nothing in the universe is stationery. In any case we consider ourselves in the central point with rest of universe in the constant motion around us. The twenty-seven nakshatras being evenly distributed on it each are having the span of 13°20’ arc. The various nakshtras are numbered from one to twenty-seven. Apart from it Vedic astrology recognizes nine grahas. They are the Sun, the Moon, the Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu&Ketu. Of these the Sun is star, the moon is a satellite of the earth; Rahu and Ketu are mere mathematical points on the zodiac. While the remaining ones are planets. When the zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts, each such part has an extension of 30 degrees of the arc. Such a division is called Rashi or Sign . A sign consist of two and a quarter nakshtras.

Each sign has a certain specific influence of its own. All the planets as they travel around each zodiac sign, exert an influence according to their separate nature and in accordance with the quality of aspect which they form.

More about principles of Astrology

As we know that there are twelve signs of the zodiac. One of sign rising happens to be the sign rising at the eastern horizon at the time of birth. This rising sign is called as lagna or Ascendant. The lagna happens to be the first house of horoscope. This means that signs and houses donot coincide. The first house has the label of sign rising at the time of birth, the second bears the label of sign that will rise next, and so on.

The nine grahas(from the sun to ketu) are the occupants of these houses. Each house represents certain characteristics. The sign falling in these houses also represents certain characteristics.

The system of Houses

Houses : There are twelve celestial houses in Astrology and a house is constituted with 30 degrees. They are derived from an equal division of the circle of observation in to 12 parts. One-twelfth part of the circle of observation constitutes an astrological house. In astronomy it is the vertical of the latitude belonging to the place of the birth. The stars on the earth show the place of birth.

The rising house is called ascendant and the others are known as angular, succedent and cadent houses. The angles are four cardipoints in the horoscope. The planets in the horoscopic chart are subservient to lagna, and their original nature undergoes modifications depending upon the lagna. The kendras(or Quadrants) : Houses 1,4, 7 and 10. These are highly significant houses. The panapharas(or Successant Houses) : Houses 2,5, 8 and 11.The Apoklimas(or Cadent Houses) : Houses 3,6,9 and 12 .The Trikons(or Trines) : Houses 1,5 and 9. These are highly auspicious and, along with the kendras, determine the health, wealth, status, dignity, rise and virtue or a native. The lagna being both a kendra and a trikona, is the most significant of all the houses. The Upachayas : Houses 3,6, 10 and 11. These houses indicate struggle, competition and material achievement. The TrikaHouses : houses 6,8 and 12. These are considered bad houses(Duhsthanas). They indicate debt, disease, loss and misery. The Ayu-sthanas(or houses of longevity) : Houses 8 and 3(8th from the 8th). They indicate the length of life and therefore, also the death. The maraka-sthanas(or killer houses): houses 2 and 7

The two halves of a horoscope. Houses 1 to 7 indicate the invisible half and houses 7 to 1 indicate the visible half of the horoscope. Houses 10 to 4 indicate the eastern half and houses 4 to 10 indicate the western half of the horoscope. VRATA / VIRADHAM- FASTING0 Simple meaning & understanding -His Holiness Swamiji Sri SelvamSiddhar VARA LAKSHMI VRATA

Celebrated In : The months of August - September Performed by : Women whose husband is still living. Religion : Hindu Hindu God : Goddess Maha Lakshmi

LORD SHIVA describes the glory of this Vrata in the SkandaPurana. It is performed by a woman whose husband is still living. Maha Lakshmi is the abode of all auspiciousness and Prosperity. This worship of Maha Lakshmi is done to obtain good progeny, and for the health and long life of the husband.

The Vrata is observed on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day of the month of Sravan (August-September). After a purificatory bath, the lady should put on a clean, fresh cloth and make a mandala with the drawing of a lotus upon it. A kalasha filled with rice and topped with fresh mango leaves, a coconut and cloth are placed on the mandala and Lakshmi is invoked therein. Fresh grains are used in the worship as they convey the idea of growth and prosperity.

After the worship of the kalasha, follows the worship of Ganesha, then the worship of the raksha or the Sacred thread. Now the main worship of Vara Lakshmi begins and the raksha is worshipped a second time. It is then tied to the right hand of the lady. after the worship various auspicious articles are given as charity to some deserving lady whose husband is alive. This lady is also fed with dainties.

Lakshmi not only bestows wealth and all sorts of material prosperity, but also imparts divine wisdom to all Her devotees. She is Vidya Shakti. She introduces Her devotees to Her Lord. She recommends them to Her Lord for their salvation.

She is the power of Lord Narayana who is also known as Lord Vishnu or Lord Hari. Narayana is God's aspect of preservation. He is an embodiment of ShuddhaSattwa. Lakshmi is His causal body. She is Maya, the illusory power of Nature. She deludes the whole world by Her veiling power and projects it through Her projecting power. She Herself as Vidya-Lakshmi enlightens the spiritual aspirant. Beauty, grace, a picturesque scenery or charming landscape, modesty, love, prosperity, music, the five elements and their combinations, the internal organs, mind, Prana, intellect-all these are Her manifestations.

Without Lakshmi even Sannyasins cannot do propaganda or preaching work or run their institutions. They are in fact more in need of Lakshmi than the house- holders because they have to do great dynamic work for humanweal. Sri Shankara worshipped Devi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi for success in his work. All great prophets and divine messengers who have done great spiritual work in the past were devotees of Mother Lakshmi, Devi and Saraswathi.

VAIKUNTHA EKADASHI Celebrated In : during the dark fortnight of the month of PhAlguna (February-March). THE STORY VAIKUNTA Ekadashi falls in the month of Marga-seersha (December-January). This is observed with all solemnity in the temples of Lord Vishnu. Fasting is prescribed on all Ekadashis, that is, the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, twice a month. . In this Kali Yuga, even if just one Ekadashi is observed with dispassion, faith and devotion, and if the mind is wholly fixed on Hari, one is freed from the rounds of birth and death. There is no doubt about this. The scriptures give us their assurance on this point. Devotees fast on this day, observe vigil the whole night and do Japa, HariKirtan and meditation. Some do not take even a drop of water. Those who are unable to fast completely can take some light fruit and milk. No rice should be taken on Ekadashi days. This is very important. The sweat that fell down from the head of Brahma assumed the form of a demon and said to the Lord, “O Lord! now give me an abode to dwell.” Brahma replied, “O demon! go and dwell in the rice particles eaten by men on Ekadashi day and become worms in their stomach.” For this reason rice is prohibited on Ekadashi. If one observes the Ekadashi fast regularly, Lord Hari is propitiated. All sins are destroyed. The mind is purified. Devotion gradually develops. Love for God becomes intense. Orthodox people in South India observe complete fasting and vigil even on ordinary Ekadashi days. For the devotees of Lord Vishnu, every Ekadashi is a very sacred day. <br> Benefits of Fasting Nowadays, many educated people do not observe fasting on this sacred day. This is due to the impact of the dark, vicious, materialistic forces. When the intellect develops a little, people begin to enter into arguments and unnecessary discussions. Intellect is a hindrance on the spiritual path. Theywho have not developed the heart but who have developed their intellect begin to doubt and question at every step. They are led astray. They want a “why” and a “how” for everything. They want “scientific” explanations for all phenomena. God is beyond proofs and presumptions. One has to approach religion and the scriptures with great faith, reverence and purity of heart. Then only are the secrets of religion revealed unto him like the apple in the palm of one’s hand. Does anybody ask his mother to prove who is his father? Fasting controls passion. It checks the emotions. It controls the senses also. It is a great penance. It purifies the mind and the heart. It destroys a multitude of sins. Fasting controls the tongue in particular which is the deadliest enemy of man. Fasting overhauls the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems. It destroys all the impurities of the body and all sorts of poisons. It eliminates uric acid deposits. Just as impure gold is rendered pure by melting it in the crucible again and again, so also this impure mind is rendered purer by repeated fasting. Young and robust Brahmacharis (celibates) should observe fasting whenever passion troubles them. Only then will they have very good meditation, as the mind will be rendered calm. The chief object of fasting is to render the system calm so that one is able to practise meditation rigorously during that period. Withdraw the senses and fix the mind on God. Pray to God to guide you and to throw a flood of light on your spiritual path. Say with feeling: “O God, guide me! Protect me, protect me! I am Thine, I am Thine! Forsake me not!” You will be blessed with purity, light and strength. Follow this Sadhana on the days that you fast, Ekadashi days in particular. Fasting is one of the ten canons of Yoga. However, avoid excessive fasting. It will produce weakness. Use your common sense. If you cannot fast for the full twenty-four hours, at least fast for 10-12 hours and then take some milk and fruit. Gradually increase your fast to 15 hours and then up to 24 hours. Fasting makes a man strong, both spiritually and mentally. Complete fasting helps to control sleep. Taking recourse to tea to control sleep is not desirable. You will not gain any spiritual strength if you depend on an external agent. During fasting avoid all company. Live alone. Utilise your time in Sadhana. When breaking a fast do not take a heavy meal or a heavy food that is hard to digest. Milk or some fruit juice is beneficial. Moderation in eating and withdrawal of the senses in Yogic meditation are the obverse and the reverse of the same coin. Moderation consists in taking a little food or water just to keep the body in good working order.In the <I>Gita </I>you will find: “Verily, Yoga is not for him who eats too much, nor who abstains to excess, nor who sleeps too much, nor to the excessively wakeful”. The Yogi withdraws his senses from the particular sense objects. The senses are made to turn into or get involved into the mind. When one is fully established in these two practices, supreme control of the senses is achieved. Once there was a demon, Mura, who oppressed the gods. The gods approached Lord Hari for protection. Hari sent Yoga Maya to kill the demon. Yoga Maya carried out the behests of the Lord successfully. Then the Lord said to Yoga Maya, “Those who observe Ekadashi will be freed from all sins, and you will be called by the name Ekadashi.” King mbarisha was a great votary of Lord Hari. He practised the EkadashiVrata for a year. Ambarishaobtained His Grace. On one occasion he fasted for three consecutive days. He was about to break the fast when Rishi Durvasa appeared as his guest. The king received him with due respect and requested him to take his meals. The Rishi agreed and went to bathe in the river. The king waited patiently for a long time, but the Rishi did not return. Time was running out; if the king did not eat anything before the day ended his Vrata would not bear fruit. And if he ate, he would be showing disregard to the Rishi. As a compromise the king took a little water to serve both the conditions. When Durvasa returned from his bath, he knew exactly what had happened, and was angry. He tore a hair from his tuft and charged it to kill Ambarisha. The king was unmoved. The discus of Lord Vishnu destroyed the power of the hair of Durvasa. It now followed the Rishi wherever he went and tried to destroy him. Rishi Durvasa went to Brahma and Shiva for help, but to no avail. He went to Lord Hari who said to him, “I am dependent on My devotees. My heart is in the possession of My devotees. Go thou, therefore, to Ambarisha; beg his pardon and thou shalt be saved.” Ambarisha thereupon prayed to the charged hair to desist from its course, and saved the Rishi. Durvasa thanked him from the bottom of his heart.

When the lady reached in the court of king, the king asked him the reason after it. Then the old lady said him, "Maharaj, On the day of Basoda, i worship SHEETLA MATA before taking meal and take the meal made on the previous day. So by the grace of MATA, my hut is safe".Hearing it, the king announced in the village that every person of village worship SHEETLA MATA on the day of Basoda and eat the meal cooked on previous day.

THE STORY
This is a three-day festival, celebrated by women also in honor of Parvati, in the month of Bhadrapad. By praying to Parvati on these three days, unmarried girls hope to get a husband like Shiva. Married women pray to her for marital bliss. According to Hindu mythology, Parvati was in love with Shiva. Being an ascetic however, Shiva was not aware of her. Parvati performed penance on the Himalayas for many years before Shiva finally noticed her.
Realizing the depth of her love and devotion, he agreed to marry her .Since then Parvati has been worshipped as Haritalika. Women and young girls maintain nirjalavrata on these three days, and keep awake all three nights. This is symbolic of the penance which Parvati undertook to get Shiva as her husband. They offer food to Brahmins and young girls. In Maharashtra, women wear green bangles, green clothes, golden bindis and kajal for luck. They distribute beautifully painted coconuts to their female relatives and friends and offer fresh fruit and green vegetables to the goddess as thanks giving. When the rituals are over, they eat a feast of jaggery and rice patolis steamed in banana leaves, a sweet made from coconut milk and rice, and mixed vegetables cooked with spices and coconut milk. Tender coconut water is the treat of this day. .

AMLA NAVAMI

THE STORY

The ninth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika denotes AmlaNavami. Nature has always lured the imaginative contours of our minds and subconciously this also is seen in our ancient scriptures. The Amla has been given the status of the divine fruit by Lord Vishnu in the Maha Vishnu Purana.

Amla is used as a major ingredient in preparation of Ayurvedic medicine. The lemony part removes acidity, sweet portion diseffects ulcers and the bitter part cures cough. Its utilitarian pupose accords an important status in the various scriptures at par with Bramha, Vishnu, Maheswara.

On this occasion Lord Vishnu is bathed in Amla paste water by the Habisha or women who observe the KartikaVrata or fasting. They cook the offering to the Lord under an Amla tree and chant the name of God while moving around the tree. Protection of nature and compassion for fellow beings is the significance of this festival.

PradoshVrata is observed on the Trayodashi of both the fortnight (Shukla and Krishna Paksha).

This is observed with the aim of achieving progeny, prosperity and fortune etc. In the evening it is a custom to perform pooja (worship) of Lord Shiv and also perform Japa (Name recitation) and religious sacrifices (Yagya). The fast is broken the next day

Celebrated In : This falls on the 7th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Margaseersha (December-January).

THE STORY

This falls on the 7th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Margaseersha (December-January). People worship the sun in the early morning and recite the Surya Sahasranama. Good actions done on this day give manifold results. Brahmins become celestials if they fast on this day and worship God; Kshatriyas, that is, people of the warrior caste, become Brahmins; Vaishyas, the merchants, become Kshatriyas: and Sudras or men of the servant caste, become Vaishyas.

If women fast on this day, they attain knowledge and derive virtues. If widows fast on this day, they get rid of widowhood from the next birth onwards. Even the sin of slaying a Brahmin is expiated by the power of fasting on this day. He who takes a bath at the time of sunrise is purified like Mother Ganges. He can never become a poor man.

Fast on this day. Observe the vow of silence. Remain in a solitary place. Do Japa. Practise intense meditation with faith and devotion. You are sure to attain God-realisation on this very day!

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman Ji, the monkey god widely venerated throughout India. It is celebrated during the month of Chaitra and is especially important to Brahmacharis, wrestlers and bodybuilders.

Hanuman was an ardent devotee of Rama, and is worshipped for his unflinching devotion to the god. From the early morning, devotees flock Hanuman temples to worship the monkey god. Hanuman Jayanti is an important festival. Hanuman is the symbol of strength and energy. Hanuman is said to be able to assume any form at will, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Vishnu's bird, Garuda in swiftness off light. He is worshipped in folk tradition as a deity with magical powers and the ability to conquer evil spirits. The devotees will visit temples and apply tilak of sindhoor to their foreheads from the Hanumans body as this is considered to be good luck.  According to the legend Sita was applying sindhoor to her head, Hanumans Ji questioned why and replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindhoor, in an effort to ensure Roma’s immortality.

SATYA NARAYAN VRATA

YOU ARE all familiar with Narada Rishi. He is the TrilokaSanchari-the one who moves about in the three worlds When he once visited the earth plane, there was great misery. He was unable to find a way to relieve human suffering. He at once approached Lord Narayana and related to Him the sad state of affairs on earth.

Lord Narayana said to Narada, "O venerable Rishi, let people observe the SatyaNarayanaVrata in the evening of Shankranti or Purnima. Let them all hear the story (Katha) of SatyaNarayana. All miseries will come to an end. There is no doubt of this."   

Rishi Narada thereupon returned to earth and preached the glory of the SatyaNarayanaVrata. Many observed the vow without taking any food during the course of the day and attained what they desired. All were happy and prosperous.

The observance of the SatyaNarayanaVrata does not cost much. You need only give a small gift to the pundit who comes to read the story and then distribute some prasad which also need not be very costly. Some wheat flour and sugar will make up the prasad. A little curd and some fruit are required. Even the poorest man can observe this Vrata.

In North India the vow is observed by the vast majority of people. It takes about three hours to complete the whole observance. It is generally observed on the full moon day, particularly the Kartik, Vaisakh, Sravan and ChaitraPurnimas and the Shankranti day. It an also be done on new moon days.

Five stories are connected with this Vrata. They speak about the glory of Lord Narayana and His Grace, His prasad, and of the incalculable benefit derived by observing the Vrata. He who hears these stories with faith, devotion and one-pointedness of mind derives considerable benefit. The first of these is the story of Narada, narrated above. The other stories have great moral lessons in them concerning truthfulness, fulfillment of promises, etc.

2. The Story of a Poor Brahmin

There was a very poor Brahmin. He was living on alms. Lord Narayana appeared before him in the form of an old Brahmin, asked him to observe the SatyaNarayanaVrata and gave him His word of assurance that he would be free from poverty, by observing this Vrata. The Brahmin acted accordingly. All his desires were fulfilled.

3. The Story of a Wood-cutter

The game Brahmin then did the Vrata on a grand scale. A poor wood-cutter entered the compound of the Brahmin to drink some water. The Katha of SatyaNarayana was going on. The wood-cutter, attracted only by the skill of the story-teller, sat down and heard it with rapt attention. He also was inspired to observe the Vrata in his house. He took some prasad and ate it.

Then he went to the market-place and sold his bundle of fuel. He received double the usual amount for his fuel. He immediately purchased the things that were necessary for the Vrata and observed it along with his family member with intense faith and devotion. All his desires were fulfilled. He enjoyed everything that was possible on this earth plane. After death he attained the supreme abode of SatyaLoka where Truth alone prevails.

Being Beaten : Such a dream is a sign of discord in family. Seeing others being beaten predicts money loss.Seeinga animal being beaten have different interpretations for different animals.

Beating : Beating someone shows that you are not happy with the person whereas beating an animal suggests damage in one's own affairs. Beating of family members shows happiness and success in love. Different relatives can be interpreted differently.

Birds : Birds depict the exalted mental condition of the dreamer. Dreaming of dove or pigeon is a sign of peace and happiness and that one is involved in philosophical or spiritual activities or some creative venture.

Clothes : Clothes suggests how one wants to look in front of others. New clothes tell of prosperity, buying of clothes indicates success in love. But torn or soiled clothes foretell some deceitful action that may harm the dreamer;specially woman dreamer should be careful from his associates.

Earth : Dreaming of earth is indication of sorrows, humiliation, illness ;different states of earth being predicted differently. But dreaming of earth full of grains or oneself being worried brings prosperity and green pastures suggest good children.

Fire : Fire in dreams is a good sign if one does not see oneself being burnt. Setting of office on fire indicates advancement in business and house on fire tells good companions and faithful servants. Kindling of fire suggests many good surprises in store for you. But if you see no flames and only smoke, it is a sign of disappointment.

House : A new house with many rooms in dream foretell newer levels of learning ,leading to gradual enlightenment.A tall building suggests success, a small building failure, a big building change in present situation and a magnificent building suggests long life and travel.

Killing : There are different situations and different interpretation regarding killing. Killing defenseless-sorrow,in self defence-victory,someone attempts to kill you-long life, killing a friend-good health, a businessman-security,a bird-damage and so on.

Love : Loving someone indicates satisfaction, joy and good fortune. Being loved suggests success, but unwanted love shows heart trouble. Failure in love indicates just the opposite, loving animals is sign of fortune.But loving friend brings in bad news and loving relatives suggests financial loss.

Tree : Seeing a tree in general denotes happiness, abundance and good news but a sapling tree indicates poverty,a dead tree foretells unhappiness, a tree with leaves turning yellow tells of sickness. Climbing a tree foretells elevation in life and work, taking fruits from the tree indicates inheritance from elderly people.

Water : Water dreams in general indicates abundance and joyful enjoyment. Muddy water tells sorrow and illness. "Let there be light" was one of the first comments of the creator of the universe. In the year 1666 Issac Newton discovered that sunlight is a combination of  Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet colors of the rainbow(VIBGYOR), which he called a spectrum. The different visible colors are due to their different wavelengths. The three colors on one extreme i.e. Violet, Indigi and Blue are cooling and soothing in nature. The three colors on other extreme i.e. Yellow, Orange and Red are hot and stimulating in nature. The green color in the middle of spectrum is a harmonizer color. It maintains the equilibrium between the hot and cold colors. COLOR It is the property of light. It is the ability to receive the vibrations of the light through the eyes. So in the case of another heavenly body-Moon, which also has its fixed rotation. This is evident in the Holy Quran. "And the Sun runneth on unto a resting place for him .That is the measuring of the mighty, the wise. And for the Moon, we have appointed mensions till she returns like and old shrivelled palm leaf. It is not for the sun to overtake the Moon, nor doth the nights outstrips the day. They float each in an orbit." (Surah X XX VI. verse 38,39,and 40). These verse prove the well ordained for well-knit mechanism of Allah's creation. At another place He says, "He is who appointed the Sun a splendour and the Moon a light and measured for her stages that he might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. Allah has created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge (Surah X verse 5)." He further commands, "He is the cleaver of the day break, and he hath appointed the night for stillness, and the Sun and the Moon for reckoning. That is the measuring of the mighty, the wise "(Surah VI verse 96). We find that in the Holy Quran, in several verses, Almighty has asked and encouraged mankind to look into and ponder over the objects of his creation, including the heaven, the stars and the Moon, in orders the understand his signs and thereby his supreme might, glory and greatness. Religion : Hindu Hindu God : Goddess Maha Lakshmi LORD SHIVA describes the glory of this Vrata in the SkandaPurana. It is performed by a woman whose husband is still living. Maha Lakshmi is the abode of all auspiciousness and Prosperity. This worship of Maha Lakshmi is done to obtain good progeny, and for the health and long life of the husband. The Vrata is observed on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day of the month of Sravan (August-September). After a purificatory bath, the lady should put on a clean, fresh cloth and make a mandala with the drawing of a lotus upon it. A kalasha filled with rice and topped with fresh mango leaves, a coconut and cloth are placed on the mandala and Lakshmi is invoked therein. Fresh grains are used in the worship as they convey the idea of growth and prosperity. After the worship of the kalasha, follows the worship of Ganesha, then the worship of the raksha or the Sacred thread. Now the main worship of Vara Lakshmi begins and the raksha is worshipped a second time. It is then tied to the right hand of the lady. after the worship various auspicious articles are given as charity to some deserving lady whose husband is alive. This lady is also fed with dainties. Lakshmi not only bestows wealth and all sorts of material prosperity, but also imparts divine wisdom to all Her devotees. She is Vidya Shakti. She introduces Her devotees to Her Lord. She recommends them to Her Lord for their salvation. She is the power of Lord Narayana who is also known as Lord Vishnu or Lord Hari. Narayana is God's aspect of preservation. He is an embodiment of ShuddhaSattwa. Lakshmi is His causal body. She is Maya, the illusory power of Nature. She deludes the whole world by Her veiling power and projects it through Her projecting power. She Herself as Vidya-Lakshmi enlightens the spiritual aspirant. Beauty, grace, a picturesque scenery or charming landscape, modesty, love, prosperity, music, the five elements and their combinations, the internal organs, mind, Prana, intellect-all these are Her manifestations. Without Lakshmi even Sannyasins cannot do propaganda or preaching work or run their institutions. They are in fact more in need of Lakshmi than the house- holders because they have to do great dynamic work for humanweal. Sri Shankara worshipped Devi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi for success in his work. All great prophets and divine messengers who have done great spiritual work in the past were devotees of Mother Lakshmi, Devi and Saraswathi. VAIKUNTHA EKADASHI Celebrated In : during the dark fortnight of the month of PhAlguna (February-March). THE STORY VAIKUNTA Ekadashi falls in the month of Marga-seersha (December-January). This is observed with all solemnity in the temples of Lord Vishnu. Fasting is prescribed on all Ekadashis, that is, the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, twice a month. . In this Kali Yuga, even if just one Ekadashi is observed with dispassion, faith and devotion, and if the mind is wholly fixed on Hari, one is freed from the rounds of birth and death. There is no doubt about this. The scriptures give us their assurance on this point. Devotees fast on this day, observe vigil the whole night and do Japa, HariKirtan and meditation. Some do not take even a drop of water. Those who are unable to fast completely can take some light fruit and milk. No rice should be taken on Ekadashi days. This is very important. The sweat that fell down from the head of Brahma assumed the form of a demon and said to the Lord, “O Lord! now give me an abode to dwell.” Brahma replied, “O demon! go and dwell in the rice particles eaten by men on Ekadashi day and become worms in their stomach.” For this reason rice is prohibited on Ekadashi. If one observes the Ekadashi fast regularly, Lord Hari is propitiated. All sins are destroyed. The mind is purified. Devotion gradually develops. Love for God becomes intense. Orthodox people in South India observe complete fasting and vigil even on ordinary Ekadashi days. For the devotees of Lord Vishnu, every Ekadashi is a very sacred day. <br> Benefits of Fasting Nowadays, many educated people do not observe fasting on this sacred day. This is due to the impact of the dark, vicious, materialistic forces. When the intellect develops a little, people begin to enter into arguments and unnecessary discussions. Intellect is a hindrance on the spiritual path. Theywho have not developed the heart but who have developed their intellect begin to doubt and question at every step. They are led astray. They want a “why” and a “how” for everything. They want “scientific” explanations for all phenomena. God is beyond proofs and presumptions. One has to approach religion and the scriptures with great faith, reverence and purity of heart. Then only are the secrets of religion revealed unto him like the apple in the palm of one’s hand. Does anybody ask his mother to prove who is his father? Fasting controls passion. It checks the emotions. It controls the senses also. It is a great penance. It purifies the mind and the heart. It destroys a multitude of sins. Fasting controls the tongue in particular which is the deadliest enemy of man. Fasting overhauls the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems. It destroys all the impurities of the body and all sorts of poisons. It eliminates uric acid deposits. Just as impure gold is rendered pure by melting it in the crucible again and again, so also this impure mind is rendered purer by repeated fasting. Young and robust Brahmacharis (celibates) should observe fasting whenever passion troubles them. Only then will they have very good meditation, as the mind will be rendered calm. The chief object of fasting is to render the system calm so that one is able to practise meditation rigorously during that period. Withdraw the senses and fix the mind on God. Pray to God to guide you and to throw a flood of light on your spiritual path. Say with feeling: “O God, guide me! Protect me, protect me! I am Thine, I am Thine! Forsake me not!” You will be blessed with purity, light and strength. Follow this Sadhana on the days that you fast, Ekadashi days in particular. Fasting is one of the ten canons of Yoga. However, avoid excessive fasting. It will produce weakness. Use your common sense. If you cannot fast for the full twenty-four hours, at least fast for 10-12 hours and then take some milk and fruit. Gradually increase your fast to 15 hours and then up to 24 hours. Fasting makes a man strong, both spiritually and mentally. Complete fasting helps to control sleep. Taking recourse to tea to control sleep is not desirable. You will not gain any spiritual strength if you depend on an external agent. During fasting avoid all company. Live alone. Utilise your time in Sadhana. When breaking a fast do not take a heavy meal or a heavy food that is hard to digest. Milk or some fruit juice is beneficial. Moderation in eating and withdrawal of the senses in Yogic meditation are the obverse and the reverse of the same coin. Moderation consists in taking a little food or water just to keep the body in good working order.In the <I>Gita </I>you will find: “Verily, Yoga is not for him who eats too much, nor who abstains to excess, nor who sleeps too much, nor to the excessively wakeful”. The Yogi withdraws his senses from the particular sense objects. The senses are made to turn into or get involved into the mind. When one is fully established in these two practices, supreme control of the senses is achieved. Once there was a demon, Mura, who oppressed the gods. The gods approached Lord Hari for protection. Hari sent Yoga Maya to kill the demon. Yoga Maya carried out the behests of the Lord successfully. Then the Lord said to Yoga Maya, “Those who observe Ekadashi will be freed from all sins, and you will be called by the name Ekadashi.” King mbarisha was a great votary of Lord Hari. He practised the EkadashiVrata for a year. Ambarishaobtained His Grace. On one occasion he fasted for three consecutive days. He was about to break the fast when Rishi Durvasa appeared as his guest. The king received him with due respect and requested him to take his meals. The Rishi agreed and went to bathe in the river. The king waited patiently for a long time, but the Rishi did not return. Time was running out; if the king did not eat anything before the day ended his Vrata would not bear fruit. And if he ate, he would be showing disregard to the Rishi. As a compromise the king took a little water to serve both the conditions. When Durvasa returned from his bath, he knew exactly what had happened, and was angry. He tore a hair from his tuft and charged it to kill Ambarisha. The king was unmoved. The discus of Lord Vishnu destroyed the power of the hair of Durvasa. It now followed the Rishi wherever he went and tried to destroy him. Rishi Durvasa went to Brahma and Shiva for help, but to no avail. He went to Lord Hari who said to him, “I am dependent on My devotees. My heart is in the possession of My devotees. Go thou, therefore, to Ambarisha; beg his pardon and thou shalt be saved.” Ambarisha thereupon prayed to the charged hair to desist from its course, and saved the Rishi. Durvasa thanked him from the bottom of his heart. SHEETALASHTAMI Celebrated In : The Dark Half of CHAITRA Masa Sheetlashtami is celebrated in the dark half of ChaitraMasa. No one else in the village used to do so.When the King of the village heard about it, he called the old lady sending his secretary. When the lady reached in the court of king, the king asked him the reason after it. Then the old lady said him, "Maharaj, On the day of Basoda, i worship SHEETLA MATA before taking meal and take the meal made on the previous day. So by the grace of MATA, my hut is safe".Hearing it, the king announced in the village that every person of village worship SHEETLA MATA on the day of Basoda and eat the meal cooked on previous day. HartalikaTeej Celebrated In : September THE STORY This is a three-day festival, celebrated by women also in honor of Parvati, in the month of Bhadrapad. By praying to Parvati on these three days, unmarried girls hope to get a husband like Shiva. Married women pray to her for marital bliss. According to Hindu mythology, Parvati was in love with Shiva. Being an ascetic however, Shiva was not aware of her. Parvati performed penance on the Himalayas for many years before Shiva finally noticed her. Realizing the depth of her love and devotion, he agreed to marry her .Since then Parvati has been worshipped as Haritalika. Women and young girls maintain nirjalavrata on these three days, and keep awake all three nights. This is symbolic of the penance which Parvati undertook to get Shiva as her husband. They offer food to Brahmins and young girls. In Maharashtra, women wear green bangles, green clothes, golden bindis and kajal for luck. They distribute beautifully painted coconuts to their female relatives and friends and offer fresh fruit and green vegetables to the goddess as thanks giving. When the rituals are over, they eat a feast of jaggery and rice patolis steamed in banana leaves, a sweet made from coconut milk and rice, and mixed vegetables cooked with spices and coconut milk. Tender coconut water is the treat of this day. . AMLA NAVAMI Celebrated In : November THE STORY The ninth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika denotes AmlaNavami. Nature has always lured the imaginative contours of our minds and subconciously this also is seen in our ancient scriptures. The Amla has been given the status of the divine fruit by Lord Vishnu in the Maha Vishnu Purana. Amla is used as a major ingredient in preparation of Ayurvedic medicine. The lemony part removes acidity, sweet portion diseffects ulcers and the bitter part cures cough. Its utilitarian pupose accords an important status in the various scriptures at par with Bramha, Vishnu, Maheswara. On this occasion Lord Vishnu is bathed in Amla paste water by the Habisha or women who observe the KartikaVrata or fasting. They cook the offering to the Lord under an Amla tree and chant the name of God while moving around the tree. Protection of nature and compassion for fellow beings is the significance of this festival. Pradoshvrata Celebrated In : December THE STORY PradoshVrata is observed on the Trayodashi of both the fortnight (Shukla and Krishna Paksha). Good actions done on this day give manifold results. Brahmins become celestials if they fast on this day and worship God; Kshatriyas, that is, people of the warrior caste, become Brahmins; Vaishyas, the merchants, become Kshatriyas: and Sudras or men of the servant caste, become Vaishyas. If women fast on this day, they attain knowledge and derive virtues. If widows fast on this day, they get rid of widowhood from the next birth onwards. Even the sin of slaying a Brahmin is expiated by the power of fasting on this day. He who takes a bath at the time of sunrise is purified like Mother Ganges. He can never become a poor man. Fast on this day. Observe the vow of silence. Remain in a solitary place. Do Japa. Practise intense meditation with faith and devotion. Hanuman is said to be able to assume any form at will, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Vishnu's bird, Garuda in swiftness off light. He is worshipped in folk tradition as a deity with magical powers and the ability to conquer evil spirits. The devotees will visit temples and apply tilak of sindhoor to their foreheads from the Hanumans body as this is considered to be good luck.  According to the legend Sita was applying sindhoor to her head, Hanumans Ji questioned why and replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindhoor, in an effort to ensure Roma’s immortality. All miseries will come to an end. There is no doubt of this."    Rishi Narada thereupon returned to earth and preached the glory of the SatyaNarayanaVrata. Many observed the vow without taking any food during the course of the day and attained what they desired. All were happy and prosperous. The observance of the SatyaNarayanaVrata does not cost much. You need only give a small gift to the pundit who comes to read the story and then distribute some prasad which also need not be very costly. Some wheat flour and sugar will make up the prasad. A little curd and some fruit are required. Even the poorest man can observe this Vrata. In North India the vow is observed by the vast majority of people. It takes about three hours to complete the whole observance. It is generally observed on the full moon day, particularly the Kartik, Vaisakh, Sravan and ChaitraPurnimas and the Shankranti day. It an also be done on new moon days. Five stories are connected with this Vrata. They speak about the glory of Lord Narayana and His Grace, His prasad, and of the incalculable benefit derived by observing the Vrata. He who hears these stories with faith, devotion and one-pointedness of mind derives considerable benefit. The first of these is the story of Narada, narrated above. The other stories have great moral lessons in them concerning truthfulness, fulfillment of promises, etc. 2. The Story of a Poor Brahmin There was a very poor Brahmin. He was living on alms. Lord Narayana appeared before him in the form of an old Brahmin, asked him to observe the SatyaNarayanaVrata and gave him His word of assurance that he would be free from poverty, by observing this Vrata. The Brahmin acted accordingly. All his desires were fulfilled. 3. The Story of a Wood-cutter The game Brahmin then did the Vrata on a grand scale. A poor wood-cutter entered the compound of the Brahmin to drink some water. The Katha of SatyaNarayana was going on. The wood-cutter, attracted only by the skill of the story-teller, sat down and heard it with rapt attention. He also was inspired to observe the Vrata in his house. He took some prasad and ate it. Then he went to the market-place and sold his bundle of fuel. He received double the usual amount for his fuel. He immediately purchased the things that were necessary for the Vrata and observed it along with his family member with intense faith and devotion. All his desires were fulfilled. He enjoyed everything that was possible on this earth plane. After death he attained the supreme abode of SatyaLoka where Truth alone prevails. Tree : Seeing a tree in general denotes happiness, abundance and good news but a sapling tree indicates poverty,a dead tree foretells unhappiness, a tree with leaves turning yellow tells of sickness.
